In American history classes, we often talked about what it would be like to live in a politically split home during the Civil War. One brother in blue, the other in grey. It’s a classic tale of a house divided, and one that has been repeated again and again throughout history.

The MacKenzie clan in Scotland started as a group of Irish families (probably called MacCoinneach aka ‘Son of Kenneth’). Imagine you’re a guy named Kenneth. It’s the 11th Century. You have just dragged your family on a journey that has lasted weeks. You have no idea that in the year of our lord 2022, Dublin - Glasgow will take less than an hour and cost $21 on Ryanair.

The MacKenzie clan grew steadily over the centuries, both in territory and in social capital. They were a big deal. If you haven’t seen Outlander then… well… I don’t even know where to start. Get ye to the Netflix. Anyway!

In the 18th century, the Jacobite risings saw Clan Mackenzie divided, with the chief Kenneth Mackenzie fighting against the rebels, and a large portion of the clan backing George Mackenzie, ~the 3rd Earl of Cromartie~, who was himself a Jacobite rebel. There was a period of time when if you saw this tartan from afar, you knew they were family. You didn’t, however, know if they were friend or foe.
